Suitable for outdoors
This article is written for those who want to grow cannabis outside in a climate like the Netherlands, Germany or Belgium. The cannabis plant is native to equatorial countries, for example, India, Nepal, Afghanistan and Mexico. In these countries the climate is warm and the sun shines longer then in northern countries. Still there are certain types of cannabis which will grow and bloom outside in northern countries like Holland, Belgium and Germany. Below I will explain what to look for when you grow outside in countries with a colder climate.
Flowering Stage:
The cycle of a cannabis plant can be divided into two stages, the growing stage and flowering stage. During the growing stage, the cannabis plant needs much light. If the light becomes less than the plant will go into the flowering stage. For outdoor cultivation this means that as the days get shorter the plant goes into the flowering stage. In the northern territory days start becoming shorter from June 21. In August the sunlight shines less than 15 hours a day. So the plant will start the flowering stage in August.
The total time of blooming varies among cannabis plant species. The duration of the flowering stage varies from 6 weeks to 14 weeks. Because the weather in September and October is not always favourable in the colder climates, it is necessary to have a cannabis plant with a short flowering stage.
Possibilities in the Colder Climates
1. You choose a cannabis plant with a short flowering stage, preferably 8 weeks or less. Your plant is ready to harvest sometime in October. With this choice all depends on the weather but usually this goes all right. Examples of cannabis types which grow well outside in colder climates are: Hollands Hope and Northern Lights.
2. You can choose an autoflower species. An autoflower is a crossing of two types of cannabis. The cross has become autoflowering which means the plant will flower automatically. An autoflower doesn’t need the days to get shorter to start blooming. AutoFlower species will usually bloom within three weeks after planting the seed. This means that the growing stage is very short and the plant stays small. Autoflowers are perfect for novice growers.
3. You will manually shorten the hours of sunlight received by the plant. You can do this by covering the plants with a lightproof bag for 12 hours a day. Make sure the plant will still receive 12 hours of sunlight a day. With this technique, almost all cannabis strains can be grown outside in colder climates. When you shorten the days you ensure that the plant will bloom earlier than August. You could, for example start with covering at the beginning of July. The plant will start flowering earlier. So you grow plants with a flowering stage of 10 or 12 weeks within the colder climates.
